Our Story

An legacy of social work

Our founding members were a remarkable group of women whose vision reached far beyond the conventions of their time.

They were well-read, socially aware, and deeply committed to progress, dignity, and empowerment of women. Among these pioneering women were Smt. T. M. Narayani Kovilamma, Dr. Mrs. Sumathi S. Menon, Smt. Kamalam K. Menon, Smt. K. E. Sharada Teacher, Smt. Narayani G. Menon, Smt.C. R. Varalakshmi, and Smt. Leela G. Nair. Several other dedicated women too joined them.

These visionary women, understood that meaningful social service requires financial sustainability. They conceived the idea of creating an organization that would not only work for the welfare and empowerment of women, but would also be supported by a self-sustaining source of income.

Their vision included a common space that would generate funds for charitable activities, while serving as a place where members could meet, learn, collaborate, and work together.

The vision took shape with the founding of the Women’s Indian Association (WIA), Calicut, in 1971. After two years of dedicated effort, the association was formally registered on 20th March 1973 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860

Around the same time, WIA established Padmasree Kalyana Mandapam, the first marriage hall in Kerala , managed entirely by women.

To this day, the revenue generated by this enduring asset helps fund WIA’s charitable initiatives and community welfare programmes, ensuring that the founders’ vision continues to serve society across generations.

On 20th March, henceforth, we will Celebrate our Legacy by Honouring Our Founder Members.
