Women, Age, and Retirement

By Aruna Ramachandran

Retirement doesn’t always guarantee a life of peace and tranquility, an observation made upon settling in Calicut after retirement. When observing women of all ages, the transition before and after the age of 60 reveals a very special journey.

When a girl is born, she is sometimes met with mixed emotions, with some viewing her as a liability or a bundle of expenses. Most people still cling to the age-old notion that boys are assets who will care for them in their twilight years, meaning boys often receive more care, concern, and education to secure high-paying jobs. In contrast, a woman’s married life often revolves around the endless needs of her husband, the tantrums of her children, and continuous household chores.

  • During this busy schedule, a woman’s own health problems, needs, and desires are frequently neglected.
  • She finds her own happiness solely in the happiness of her family.
  • Working women face the added burden of rushing to the office amid the confusion at home.
  • Even after retiring at 60, there is no retirement from household work, as they often take their grandchildren under their wings.

However, reaching this juncture often sparks a realization that it is time to start pampering herself and exploring the outside world. By stepping out and joining clubs and Women’s associations, senior women connect with peers and find inspiration in their mental strength and confidence.

They begin to shine in multiple fields, including:

  • Writing, dancing, and singing.
  • Conducting and participating in quiz programs.
  • Throwing big parties and engaging in charity work.

Through all this, they prove they are excellent at multi-tasking without neglecting their homes. Women are realizing their worth, voicing their opinions, and fighting their fears. Seeing senior women cheerfully participating in games and dances despite their aches proves that age is just a number, and it is time to rock!
